Data center-driven electricity woes drive legislation

With data center energy demand projected to double or triple by 2028, there is rising pressure to decouple data center demands from the rising cost of living for American families. In that vein, the first bipartisan federal legislation has been proposed: The Guaranteeing Rate Insulation from Data Centers (GRID) Actsponsored by Republican Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal, would require that new data center operators (specifically those using 20 MW or more) power their facilities with off-grid sources. It would also offer a 10-year off-ramp for existing data centers, allowing them time to make the transition to independent power sources.
Already, many hyperscalers are partnering with energy providers to power growing AI operations. Tomorrow, RCR Tech will do a deeper dive into the proposal, and the issues that are driving it.
