In sum – what to know:

Up to 1 GW planned capacity – The proposed Skellefteå campus could reach one gigawatt, targeting AI and cloud workloads.

Renewable energy focus – The facility is expected to be primarily powered by renewable energy, pending approvals.

EdgeConneX is planning to enter the Swedish market with a proposed data center campus in Skellefteå, as part of its broader European expansion strategy. The company said it intends to acquire the site from Lyten, which specializes in lithium-sulfur batteries and energy storage.

The project remains subject to administrative and regulatory approvals. If completed, EdgeConneX aims to develop a campus with potential capacity of up to one gigawatt to support artificial intelligence and cloud computing workloads. The company said the facility would be primarily powered by renewable energy and could become one of the largest data center campuses in Europe.

The development aligns with EdgeConneX’s strategy to expand digital infrastructure capacity across the Nordic region, the data center company said.

“Sweden represents an attractive long-term market for digital infrastructure investment. The country’s access to renewable energy, stable power grid, technical workforce and strong sustainability framework align with our long-term approach to infrastructure development. As with all our projects, sustainability considerations will inform our planning and engagement as the project advances, alongside our focus on supporting the evolving needs of AI and cloud customers,” said Dick Theunissen, managing director for EMEA at EdgeConneX.

EQT, which backs EdgeConneX, also commented on the planned entry into Sweden. “EQT is proud to support EdgeConneX’s entry into Sweden – EQT’s home market. This reflects our commitment to building resilient infrastructure that can strengthen Europe’s digital backbone. Over time, we believe the data center site in Skellefteå can help advance Sweden’s digital competitiveness and contribute to positioning the country at the forefront of AI development in Europe,” said Eirik Dahle Benzon, managing director at EQT

Founded in 2009, EdgeConneX has a current global footprint of 80 data centers in operation or development across more than 50 markets across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and South America. The company’s European footprint spans Ireland, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, and Spain.
