The planned AWS facility is expected to deliver a total capacity of 473MW

In sum – what to know:

$430M hyperscale expansion planned – AWS is developing a 473MW campus in Navi Mumbai, signaling continued large-scale investment in India’s data center market.

Part of broader $35B India strategy – The project aligns with Amazon’s long-term investment plans across cloud and AI infrastructure in the country.

Navi Mumbai consolidates as a hub – The region continues to attract hyperscalers and colocation providers due to land availability and infrastructure proximity.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is planning a $429.8 million investment with the aim of developing a new data center campus near Taloja in Navi Mumbai, further expanding its infrastructure footprint in India.

The U.S. company has submitted an application to the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority seeking approval for the project, which will be built on a 49-acre site, according to Indian press reports.

The proposed development includes six buildings, with four seven-story structures designated for data center operations. Two additional two-story buildings will support power and water infrastructure. The planned facility is expected to deliver a total capacity of 473MW.

The investment aligns with AWS’s wider expansion strategy in India. In December 2025, Amazon announced plans to invest $35 billion in the country, covering cloud infrastructure and AI-related capacity. AWS has already committed $8.3 billion to its Mumbai cloud region and continues to scale operations, including a $7 billion expansion in Hyderabad.

Other data center firms operating in the Navi Mumbai area includes  Sify, STT GDC, L&T, Equinix, Colt and Bridge Data Centres.

India’s total data center capacity had exceeded 1.5 gigawatts (GW) as of September 2025, with Mumbai accounting for 53% of the operational stock, about 1,530 megawatts (MW), according to a previous report by Indian commercial real estate services firm CBRE. The city’s dominance is attributed to its proximity to global internet exchange points and undersea cable landing stations.

After Mumbai, Chennai (20%), Delhi-NCR (10%), and Bengaluru (7%) follow as key markets. Together, the four cities account for nearly 90% of India’s total data center capacity, CBRE said.

The report also said that India’s data center capacity has seen consistent year-on-year growth, rising from 575 MW in 2021 to 1,529 MW by September 2025.

The CBRE report said that India has attracted nearly $94 billion in data center investment commitments since 2019, with Telangana, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu emerging as the top three destinations.
