In sum – what to know:

14MW of new AI capacity – Nscale will deploy up to 14MW across three BT sites, expanding UK-based compute for AI workloads.

Sovereign AI focus grows – The project supports local data processing, regulatory compliance and national control over AI infrastructure.

Networks underpin AI scale – The partnership highlights the critical role of high-capacity connectivity in enabling large-scale AI deployments.

U.K. telecom operator BT and AI infrastructure firm Nscale have announced plans to develop sovereign AI data centers in the United Kingdom, aiming to expand domestic compute capacity and support growing demand for artificial intelligence workloads.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nscale will deploy up to 14MW of AI data center capacity across three existing BT sites in the U.K. BT will provide the underlying infrastructure and connectivity, although specific locations have not been disclosed.

The facilities will be powered by Nvidia’s full-stack AI platform and are designed to support both public and private sector use cases. The initiative also builds on BT’s sovereign platform, enabling organizations to run AI workloads locally while meeting regulatory, security, and data residency requirements.

Jon James, chief executive officer of BT Business, said the partnership reflects the role of networks in enabling AI infrastructure. “The development of AI and data center infrastructure is key to unlocking economic growth in the U.K., and is only possible with the best, most trusted networks at the foundation,” he said.

Tom Burke, chief revenue officer at Nscale, highlighted the importance of connectivity in scaling AI deployments. “Telecommunications have a critical role to play in this shift – you can’t deliver AI at scale without resilient, high-capacity networks as the backbone,” he said.

The project aligns with broader efforts in the U.K. to strengthen sovereign AI capabilities, a growing priority as governments seek greater control over critical digital infrastructure. Sovereign AI typically refers to the ability to develop, deploy, and operate AI systems within national borders, ensuring that data, compute, and operations remain subject to local laws and governance frameworks.

This approach is gaining momentum amid increasing concerns around data security, regulatory compliance, and geopolitical dependencies. By keeping AI workloads and infrastructure within the country, organizations can reduce exposure to external risks while maintaining greater oversight of sensitive data.

Nscale is already developing and operating data center assets across multiple regions, including the U.K., Nordics and the United States. In the U.K., the company is building a large-scale facility in Loughton, which is expected to support high-density AI workloads and is scheduled to go live by the end of 2026.
