As AI infrastructure investment accelerates across Europe, data center operators will need to place greater emphasis on community engagement and environmental responsibility, according to Nordic data center provider atNorth, which said negative public sentiment has become one of the biggest challenges facing future expansion.
Speaking with RCRTech, Fredrik Jansson, chief strategy and marketing officer at atNorth, said addressing concerns about the industry has become the company’s biggest challenge as demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow.
“The biggest challenge for atNorth is addressing the negative sentiment around data centers both at local, national, and at a European level, and this is something that atNorth takes very seriously. Our mission is ‘More Compute for a Better World’ and we are committed to working in as environmentally and socially responsible a way as possible,” the executive said.
Jansson said the company seeks to address those concerns by embedding sustainability into the design and operation of its facilities across the Nordic region. “All of our data centers run on renewable power and benefit from highly energy efficient cooling technologies that are not water intensive. Heat reuse equipment is fitted a standard to our newer sites and heat reuse partnerships are considered at the land acquisitions stage,” the executive said.
He noted that heat reuse has already become part of the company’s operating model at several locations. “We currently recycle heat for use in local district heating networks at our SWE01 site in Sweden and also heat a local branch of Finnish retailer Kesko Corporation at our FIN02 site.”
Beyond energy efficiency, atNorth is also incorporating biodiversity initiatives and local community engagement into its expansion strategy. “We also take care of our natural surroundings. We build responsibly and aim to be mindful of local landscapes. At our DEN02 campus in Denmark we will dedicate a portion of land to biodiversity and for local people to enjoy,” he said.
Jansson added that community engagement extends beyond the design of new facilities. “We prioritize hiring locally and actively support educational and charitable initiatives such as sponsoring a local run in Akureyri and the town light festival in Reykjanesbær – both in Iceland, funding swimming lessons for children in Finland – as well as mental health initiatives, anti-bullying programs and even local football clubs across our other Nordic locations.”
Looking ahead, Jansson said the company expects demand for AI infrastructure across the Nordic region to remain strong as organizations continue deploying a broad range of compute-intensive workloads.
“AI training workloads, AI inference, and traditional cloud services will all be growth drivers in the years to come and the Nordics is in a unique position to support this growth thanks to abundant renewable and low carbon energy and low cost, predictable energy pricing.”
The Nordic data center provider recently announced plans for NOR01, a new campus in Haugaland, Norway. The site is expected to deliver 120MW in its initial phases before scaling to 350MW over time. Power availability is projected for 2028 and will be supported by new transmission infrastructure, including substations being developed by Statnett and regional grid operator Fagne.
