According to AFCOM’s 2026 State of the Data Center Report, the average data center rack density has officially hit 27 kW per rack – a 69% increase from the previous year. In today’s RCRTech “top story,” below, we look at the issue of “stranded assets” and the risk of overbuilding. What can data center operators and grid operators do to mitigate the scourge of stranded assets or “revenue sinkholes”?
Reuse and repurposing of assets in existing facilities can help foster a more sustainable approach, with organizations like Crusoe and others future-proofing spaces with Digital Renewable Optimization or “circular energy” strategies that reuse energy instead of releasing it as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The “shadow” grid of colocated “Behind-the-Meter” projects hold tremendous potential for building out a longer-term, more meaningful utility through private, off-grid natural gas or nuclear plants. It’s an exciting time, as SMRs and Generation IV nuclear reactors will produce vast amounts of clean, high-temperature heat that will run concurrently to hydrogen production plants and seawater desalination facilities.
Modern gas turbines from companies like Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will burn cleaner hydrogen or biofuels in rapidly evolving supply chains. And, industrial-scale battery systems will enable data centers to redirect private power back into the public grid when necessary.

AI Infrastructure Top Stories
Avoid stranded DC assets: Vacancy is at all-time lows and trillions-of-dollars will be spent on data center builds, but to avoid a trail of stranded assets and revenue sinkholes, operators must follow best practices for adaptive reuse of their assets.
Analyst Angle – AIOps: The next phase of telecom AIOps will require that AI-generated insight convert into repeatable operational action, but scale means data, reasoning, policy, execution, feedback must connect inside operational workflows.
Quantum-safe networking: Quantum-ready networks are the security and communication backbone for AI infrastructure, which Will Townsend of Lonestar Advisory & Research explores with Sean Kinney in today’s “Beyond the Network.”
AI Today: What You Need to Know
Pope’s Magnifica Humanitas: Pope Leo XIV and Anthropic’s Christopher Olah met at the Vatican, announcing that on May 25, the pontiff will launch his 1st encyclical, a document on the care of human dignity in the era of AI and AI-driven warfare.
Tata-ASML semi fab deal: India’s Tata Electronics has signed a deal with the Dutch technology giant ASML to build India’s first front-end semiconductor fabrication plant – which will give New Delhi a domestic semiconductor manufacturing base.
Samsung partially thwarts strike: Samsung has won an injunction partially blocking a planned strike by its South Korean workforce, however, if 50k employees walk off the job Thursday, it would be the largest strike in Samsung’s history.
HSBC-funded decarbonization: HSBC announced today the launch of a new $4 billion Sustainability and Transition Credit Facility, which will help mainland China-based companies in the clean energy and low-carbon sectors scale internationally.
Chase Coleman bets $180M on Intel: Chase Coleman’s hedge fund Tiger Global Management, which has about $78 billion in assets under management, acquired 1,638,700 shares of Intel (valued at about $180 million).
‘Credibility’ central to Musk- Altman case: In week 3 of the trial, OpenAI’s Sam Altman was accused of having a history of lying and self dealing, but he fired back, painting Musk as a power-seeker who wanted to control the development of AGI.
