AI TechTalk with Schneider Electric's Sébastien Cruz-Mermy
In this week’s RCRTech AI TechTalk, I speak to Sébastien Cruz-Mermy about high-density AI workloads and the phased approach many data center operators are taking toward 800Vdc. Driven by the relentless power demands of next-gen AI clusters in which rack densities are soaring from 100 to 500 kW and even 1 MW+, he describes hybrid deployments and the phased transition from traditional AC power to DC power distribution.
Because most operators do not want to rip up existing facilities, they’re converting power to 800Vdc inside a specialized sidecar cabinet right at the compute rack, planning to later eliminate multiple intermediate AC/DC conversions by moving the DC conversion upstream in the power system.
“To expand this DC distribution higher on the distribution chain of the power system and to have more centralized DC architecture is the dynamic that we are supporting and where a lot of innovations are happening to enable the industry to move in that direction,” said Cruz-Mermy.
