GaN to revolutionize power supply efficiency in DCs

In 2026, Gallium Nitride (GaN) is expected to transition from a highly specialized power material to a mainstream industrial standard, particularly driven by the immense power demands of AI data centers and the widespread adoption of 800V electric vehicle architectures. As RCRTech reports in “Will GaN be a game-changer in the data center,” power-supply units (PSUs) are the backbone of data centers, and PSUs designed for traditional server configurations are struggling to keep up with the demands of GPU-based AI accelerators. That’s where GaN comes in, with efficiency, power density, and thermal performance that is superior to traditional silicon-based components. That’s why GaN is  increasingly used in PSUs and power conversion systems in data centers. There are technical and reliability, manufacturing, and supply chain obstacles to overcome for widespread commercial use, but GaN’s significant performance benefits are expected to outweigh its remaining challenges.
