It’s all AI infrastructure

It’s all AI infrastructure

The AI infrastructure race shows no sign of slowing. Ciena announced a $270 million acquisition of Nubis Communications to strengthen optical and copper interconnects for data center AI workloads. In the U.K., AI Pathfinder pledged nearly $25 billion for new data centers to establish one of Europe’s largest sovereign AI hubs, while Europe also launched InvestAI, a €20 billion plan for AI gigafactories.

OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank unveiled five new U.S. Stargate sites, with CEO Sam Altman pledging to build 1 GW of AI capacity each week. Meta, meanwhile, is angling for wholesale power authority, underlining how AI demand is reshaping not just chips and data centers, but energy markets themselves.

In an RCR Wireless News exclusive, analyst Vish Nandlall looks back at Nvidia’s $5B Intel investment, calling it a strategic pact with echoes of Microsoft’s investment in a struggling Apple to stabilize the personal computer ecosystem. He writes: “Nvidia’s capital infusion into Intel has a similar resonance. It is not charity. It is a strategic alignment where each player shores up the other to create the foundation for a new phase of competition.”

Other headlines include AMD deepening ties with Cohere, Infosys broadening its Sunrise AI collaboration, and Malaysia piloting AI-driven traffic management.

All of this might have you finally wondering: Is all infrastructure going to be AI infrastructure? That’s exactly the question that Mirantis Global Field CTO Shaun O’Meara tackles. Hint: yes, yes it is. “This is not hyperbole,” he claims.

AI Today: What You Need to Know

All infra is AI infra: This article argues that soon, every layer of the technology stack will be reshaped to support AI workloads. “All technology infrastructure will effectively be AI infrastructure. This is not hyperbole,” the author writes.

New Stargate sites: OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced five new U.S. AI data center sites, bringing the combined planned capacity — along with their flagship site and other ongoing projects — brings Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts.

1 GW/wk of AI infra: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman aims to build 1 GW of new AI infrastructure per week via the Stargate initiative — a bold push hinting at the scale needed to keep up with AI demand.

Malaysia pilots AI traffic: CelcomDigi and Malaysian authorities are piloting the nation’s first AI-powered traffic intelligence system in Petaling Jaya, using 5G and analytics to optimize traffic flow.

Meta seeks wholesale power role: Meta has applied through Atem Energy to sell wholesale electricity in the U.S., a move linked to surging AI-driven data center demand as the company builds massive new power-hungry facilities.

Embracing networking AI: As AI adoption grows, infrastructure must keep pace. Beyond GPUs and data centers, networking is the critical pillar that enables compute resources to work together — making AI scale possible.

AI-arrgghhh! Four types of AI: Nvidia’s Jensen Huang calls agentic AI a multi-trillion-dollar opportunity, but for most enterprises it’s more jargon. With talk of physical AI and AGI, many still seek plain-speak clarity before buy-in.

Infosys expands Sunrise AI deal: Infosys has expanded its collaboration with Swiss telecom firm Sunrise to advance AI efforts under the “Topaz” initiative, boosting investor sentiment and pushing its share price higher amid renewed growth expectations.

Inside Europe’s InvestAI: Europe has launched InvestAI, a €20B plan to build AI gigafactories — four large-scale training hubs aimed at sovereignty, shared access, and enabling startups through public/private capital models.

AMD, Cohere deepen AI ties: AMD has expanded its collaboration with Cohere, offering Instinct GPU infrastructure for Cohere’s AI suite and integrating the North platform into internal workloads.
