NTN services have entered the mainstream, and the vision of integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks is beginning to take shape

Connectivity provided by non-terrestrial network (NTN) systems is moving from the margins of the communications market into the mobile mainstream. The technical question—whether a satellite can deliver broadband or connect an ordinary handset—has largely been answered. The next phase is about industrial scale: which providers can manufacture, launch and operate enough capacity, at sufficiently low cost, to deliver a reliable and commercially sustainable service.

The broader market is expanding quickly. Commercial satellite-industry revenue reached $303 billion in 2025, while satellite-broadband subscriptions surpassed 10 million. Lower launch costs, mass-produced spacecraft, software-defined platforms and cheaper terminals are improving the economics of space-based connectivity. At the same time, providers are extending beyond residential broadband into aviation, maritime, government, enterprise and direct-to-device, or D2D, services.

D2D represents the most immediate route into the mass market because it connects the smartphone already in the customer’s pocket. Around 45 mobile operators have launched or are trialing satellite-to-handset services. But the market includes very different propositions. Apple and Globalstar have built a guided experience centered on emergency communications, roadside assistance, location sharing and messaging. T-Mobile and Starlink are making satellite connectivity more automatic and supporting selected applications beyond terrestrial coverage. AST SpaceMobile is pursuing the broader ambition of delivering voice, application data and eventually video directly to conventional smartphones.

Consumers should nevertheless understand current NTN services as coverage extension, not performance equivalence. Satellite connectivity can replace no signal with usable service, particularly in rural areas, on remote roads or during emergencies. It does not yet reproduce the responsiveness, capacity or indoor performance of a terrestrial mobile network.

Users may need to be outdoors with a relatively clear view of the sky. Connections may not be immediate, messages can take time to transmit and conventional applications may operate slowly or time out. Advertised throughput figures also tend to describe total capacity within a satellite beam or coverage cell—not the sustained speed available to each person sharing it.

For that reason, the most meaningful near-term metrics are connection time, message-completion rate, application success and availability rather than peak download speed. Reliability will also determine the business model. Consumers express considerable interest in satellite coverage, but only 47% of respondents in one Opensignal poll said they were willing to pay more for it.

The service envelope should widen as standards mature. 3GPP Release 17 created the foundation for standardized NR NTN and satellite-supported IoT. Release 18 improves bandwidth, mobility and broadband-terminal support, while Release 19 adds spectrum flexibility, device categories and capacity enhancements. These advances should make voice, data, tracking, monitoring and fixed-access services more scalable and predictable.

The longer-term 6G vision is not simply faster satellite broadband. It is an integrated “3-D network” combining terrestrial cells, low-Earth-orbit constellations and other satellite layers within a single connectivity architecture. Each layer will retain different latency, capacity and coverage characteristics, but the network will select among them according to location, application requirements and available resources.

That will require coordinated mobility, policy, charging and service assurance, supported by AI and digital twins capable of managing moving users, satellites and beams. NTN reaches maturity when satellite is no longer treated as a separate fallback—and users no longer need to know which network is carrying their service.
