A day in the life of telecoms and tech – early summer, 2026. Which means sovereignty everywhere, of course, most notably as KPN follows the new Euro-stack model with Schwarz Digits, but also via some extra commentary from Softbank about its accelerated cloud platform for Japanese workloads, plus all the discussions here yesterday and over the last weeks about post-2027 EU auction rules for the 2GHz MSS band, hyperscaler-led hybrid models via the likes of Telefónica, and the Dutch government’s line in the sand about Kyndryl foreign involvement in citizen IDs.
There is more, besides: the AI chip wars are bubbling over, per Christian’s piece about Qualcomm’s maybe-intentions in the ASIC market, going up against Nvidia and AMD, and Mistral AI’s soundbites about designing its own AI hardware; quantum computing is bubbling up, as Sean writes of moves by telcos to migrate to quantum networks to tackle “harvest now, decrypt later” risks (see you at Quantum Safe Networks Forum on July 14?); and private / enterprise wireless is bubbling under (if you believe Nokia, and all the other big quitters).
But there is news about enterprise networks, whether private or sliced, everyday, and on this day, May 29, EdgeNectar and Ericsson have announced quite-interesting private 5G deals about FWA in rural Norway and manufacturing at the McMaster research institute, respectively. Oh, and not something RCR would report, but Verizon has just gained a trifecta of associated Gartner MQ credits, precisely in line with its broader enterprise pitch, converging around AI-at-work. Which is what it has talked about RCR variously through the whole year (search the archive).
See also: Telefónica’s energy reduction, down 12% in a decade, even as data traffic has spiralled upwards by 12-times (which, on reflection, might actually be the biggest story of the day), and further talk about satellite NTN systems and 5G etc in the defense market. It’s all here: a telco day in 2026, just like any other.

RCR Top Stories
Qualcomm vs Nvidia? Qualcomm is moving into custom ASICs via a deal with ByteDance. It may supply millions of AI chips designed for AI agents and model training. It would see the firm compete more directly with Nvidia and AMD.
Hybrid quantum-safe: Operators are building quantum-safe networks to protect data from quantum computers. Because of “harvest now, decrypt later” risks and regulations, telcos are starting migration now. Sean Kinney with the insights.
More sovereign AI: Softbank says its new AI GPU cloud platform will target enterprises needing secure, Japan-based AI infrastructure, positioning the service as an alternative to global hyperscalers for sovereign AI workloads.
Enterprises in India: harat Sinha, CEO at Airtel Business, says resilient, intelligent connectivity is essential for global enterprises seeking to scale operations in India, newly available as the country accelerates its own digital transformation.
Defense comms needs: Defense comms needs major upgrades and stronger public/private cooperation to integrate commercial tech into military networks, central to sensing, coordination, and decision-making. Sean Kinney, again.

Powering Sovereign AI at Scale
AI is central to telecom and national infrastructure, but must be secure, compliant and sovereign. Read this white paper to see how AI Factories enable trusted scale and new revenue.
Beyond the Headlines
NTN interoperability: The future of NTN depends on ecosystem collaboration. In a new Pulse interview, Skylo co-founder Andrew Nuttall talks standards and interoperability, and what needs to happen for NTN services to scale globally.
Workforce readiness: Telcos must rethink workforce training as networks evolve. AI practice environments can improve retention and customer skills, and prepare distributed teams to deliver consistent experiences at scale.
EU digital statecraft: Europe is reshaping its digital economy around sovereignty, from satellite spectrum (post-2027 auction rules) and sovereign cloud (Google picks Telefónica) to citizen ID systems (the Dutch have blocked Kyndryl).
Tough telco math: Vish Nandlall breaks down carrier finances with a lemonade-stand analogy and some 2025 operator numbers, and argues that the problem isn’t a lack of ambition or vision, it’s basic economics.
Be quantum ready! Post-quantum cryptography migration is becoming a structured, multi-phase process for telecom networks, requiring coordinated action from standards bodies, operators, and vendors – says the GSMA.
What We’re Reading
Sovereignty goes Dutch: KPN and Schwarz Digits, part of Schwarz Group, are to launch a sovereign cloud for the Dutch market. The solution will be hosted in KPN’s data centers; the carrier will also provide connectivity and IT services.
Telco energy savings: Telefónica has reduced energy consumption by 12% in a decade, despite a twelve-fold increase in data traffic. It has seen a 92% reduction in consumption per unit of traffic since 2015, and cut its total emissions by 49%.
Verizon MQ trifecta: Verizon is the only US telco to nab IoT, private wireless, and GWAN (AI Connect) in Gartner Magic’s latest MQ reviews. Which chimes with the convergence narrative that RCR has been speaking with the firm about lately.
Private 5G for FWA: Edge Nectar and Private Networks AS will deploy Norway’s first private 5G for FWA to deliver broadband for rural and underserved regions. The solution combines the first’s 5G platform with the second’s local know-how.
Sequans sells Bitcoins: Sequans has paid off all its convertible debt by selling some of its Bitcoin holdings. The firm will stop with its Bitcoin investments, it says, and focus on its original 4G and 5G IoT semiconductor business.
