Lumen’s $475m acquisition of Alkira signals a shift from carrier to platform operator, aiming to unify east-west cloud-to-cloud and north-south enterprise traffic under a single programmable control plane. Which is what every fiber operator out there is trying to do, and what every mobile operator, within a different domain of the AI infrastructure grid, is also trying to do – build programmable networks for on-demand AI traffic services. Lumen’s claim that “no one else is doing that” reflects its ambition more than the consensus. But it highlights where value is moving: away from connectivity plumbing toward coordinated cloud and edge orchestration.
Which is also what every telco has talked about for years; it is just the stakes are higher with AI, along with the perceived opportunity. And if successful, Lumen will position itself as a service platform rather than a traditional utility pipe, monetising AI data flows across regions and clouds. However, integration risk remains: stitching together control planes, APIs, and legacy systems is complex, and rivals are pursuing similar abstraction strategies – even if less boldly (or not). Ultimately, success depends on execution speed, developer adoption, and whether enterprises actually trust a single provider for multi-cloud connectivity at global scale. Same challenges, as always.

Indosat bets on AI: Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison is embedding AI across its ops and expanding into cloud and cybersecurity, while building distributed infrastructure and maintaining shareholder returns amid a tough macroeconomic environment.
Anthropic deals: As inference costs place significant pressure on margins, Anthropic is exploring a partnership with UK startup Fractile, which could introduce a new, non-hyperscaler supplier into the company’s hardware stack.
AI-native 6G: Qualcomm explains how 6G is evolving into an AI-native network that integrates connectivity, sensing, and distributed computing across devices, edge, and cloud, enabling smarter, more efficient operations and new services.

Powering Sovereign AI at Scale
AI is central to telecom and national infrastructure, but must be secure, compliant and sovereign. Read this white paper to see how AI Factories enable trusted scale and new revenue.
Beyond the Headlines
AI infra push: Brazilian firm Tecto is investing $2bn to expand AI-ready data centers, targeting enterprise demand and deploying a hybrid infrastructure model as energy, latency and distributed computing reshape infrastructure strategies.
Nokia purge: Cut-price FWA sale shows Nokia’s shift to AI infra, sets the tone for further disposals, and gives Inseego an instant double-your-business boost – which poses questions for the San Diego firm, as well.
AI for defense: HPE has released a new AI server platform, ruggedized and optimized for difficult edge deployments; the release chomes with this week’s discussion at Defense Comms Forum, plus with Ericsson and NTT Data.
BESS, part 1: When goals move beyond simple standby backup and require an active, value-generating asset, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) may be the way to improve day-to-day data center economics.
BESS, part 2: With grid interconnection delays exceeding three or four years, BESS helps data center builders and operators achieve ‘fast-track’ commissioning in months rather than years.
