Not another MWC sugar-rush!

Home RCR Wireless News Not another MWC sugar-rush!

RCR (London) was on holiday, and wasn’t invited anyway – maybe because of all the musical chairs at RCR Towers recently. So maybe there’s a reason to write-off Ericsson’s pre-MWC shindig in London last week altogether, and not to give it a second thought. Except enough good people said enough good things about it in passing, and the Swedish firm showed its hand and pointed the way in a flurry of press notes (nine, at least) about its future-looking MWC activities. And so, without responding to the questions RCR would have asked, we are left with Ericsson’s press-approved utterances about the road ahead. And what should we conclude?

That Ericsson is putting the final touches on stuff this industry has talked about for years: network automation, going to Level 4 (with sundry AI at Swisscom, others); and network slicing, now verifiable for service contracts (speed-tested with Ookla). The firm is embedding agentic and generative AI into its hardware, software, antennas. This stuff will arrive for the tail-end of 5G (SA/A), and work like a dream by the time 6G actually shows up (post-2030). Or so the story goes. Ericsson has other news, as well – also covered here. But the gist is pretty clear.

Ericsson’s narrative, like everyone’s, reaches some kind of climax once a year in Spain. It is reflective of and contributory to the industry’s annual sugar-rush tales of frustration and triumph – which tend to spark for a while in the Barcelona sun, only to fizzle out in the rain on the tarmac at Heathrow. Reality bites, always. But this time – 2026, deep in a generational tech cycle, as articulated here by Ericsson – it feels like a proper cliffhanger: maturing 5G tech, accelerating AI tech, and an industry that desperately needs a break.

Ericsson roundup: From real-time slice validation to next-gen AI RAN software, Ericsson raised the curtain on its MWC last week – and the whole industry’s MWC, to an extent. Read about deals with Ookla, Apple, MediaTek, Swisscom, others.

D2D reality bites: The hype around direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services  continues to grow – and so does sketicism over D2D profitability. Here’s what industry experts think about the present and the future of the D2D market.

AI for DSS: Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) could help to predict traffic demand and reallocate spectrum between 4G and 5G in real time – and boost efficiency and operator ROI in the process. But could AI improve it even further?

Top agentic APIs: Telefónica and Nokia are testing AI agents to activate network APIs, starting with fraud prevention. In an RCR interview, Telefónica’s Alex Harmand explains where agent-enabled APIs could unlock revenue.

Telus adds 3.8 GHz: Telus says its newly acquired 3.8 GHz spectrum will enhance network 5G capacity in British Columbia and Alberta, supporting traffic growth, special events demand, and future enterprise and AI-driven 5G applications.

Beyond the Headlines

The big 5G lie: Despite widespread 5G branding and some 6G momentum already many users still lack true next-generation performance. On this week’s Unmuted, OpenSignal’s Sylwia Kechiche explores the widening perception-versus-reality gap.

KT advances 6G: Samsung, KT, and Keysight have verified X-MIMO technology in the 7 GHz band, achieving 3 Gbps peak downlink speeds and testing ultra-high-density antennas as part of ongoing 6G research and standardization efforts.

Tata and OpenAI: Tata Group and OpenAI have signed a deal around enterprise AI deployment, agentic industry solutions, and up to 1GW of infrastructure development, alongside youth training initiatives across India.

Telco-AI $$$ spike: Nvidia’s annual AI in telecoms survey says – guess what! – that telcos are spending more on AI in order to boost revenue, reduce costs, and drive network automation. Most operators plan to increase AI spending in 2026.

Beyond gen AI: The telco industry’s AI strategy is evolving from productivity tools to autonomous agents. A deal between Ericsson and Mistral AI fits right in, targeting code migration, network automation, and faster decision-making.

What We're Reading

$1.94bn tower deal: Vertical Bridge has completed a $1.94 billion asset-backed securitization, issuing tower revenue notes on a portfolio of 10,425 tower sites across all 50 US states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.

Optical transport surge: The global optical transport equipment market reached $16 billion in 2025, growing about 10% on strong DCI demand, reports Dell’Oro Group. Hyperscalers drove gear purchases, with cloud spending up sharply.

White-collar takeover: Microsoft’s AI chief has warned that most white-collar tasks – from law and accounting to project management – could be fully automated by AI in 12-18 months, reshaping office work and jobs (and surely of office software?).

5G drone attacks: A new report from ENEA examines how networks are being used by drones in modern conflicts for extended range. It outlines defensive strategies to counter mobile‑connected drones while minimising impact on civilians.

AI copyright rules: Senators have introduced a bill aimed at AI transparency and creator rights. It would require companies to disclose copyrighted works used to train generative AI models and proposes penalties for non-disclosure.
