U.S.-China telecom rift widens

Home RCR Wireless News U.S.-China telecom rift widens

The U.S. is further distancing itself from China on the cellular and telecom front, while global, U.S.-based tech giants are deepening ties with India, accelerating its rise as a strategic counterweight in the global tech ecosystem.

The biggest development: The FCC is considering barring China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom from connecting to U.S. networks, citing failures around robocall mitigation and long-standing national-security concerns. If adopted, it would mark one of the most consequential steps yet in the unraveling of U.S.-China telecom interdependence.

But while one geographic relationship frays, another is strengthening. Microsoft has announced a massive $17.5 billion investment in India — its largest commitment in the country to date — to expand hyperscale cloud and AI capacity, roll out population-scale AI services, and double its national skilling efforts to 20 million people. This positions India not just as a major AI market but as a foundational pillar in Microsoft’s global growth strategy.

And on the semiconductor front, Tata and Intel have signed a pivotal pact to explore chip manufacturing and advanced packaging in India, reinforcing the country’s push to become a resilient alternative to China-centric supply chains.

In short: Washington is pulling back from Beijing, while the U.S. tech world is surging toward New Delhi.
