Space to silicon

India stands at a major infection point in its deep tech innovation. A recent report highlights that the country currently hosts 20 percent of the global semiconductor design engineers. This, combined with the India Semiconductor Mission initiative — through which the country has attracted $18 billion in private investments — represents huge opportunity for India.
This is reflected in foreign governments’ strategic interest in the Indian semi industry. Malaysian Trade and Industry Minister, Lieu Chin Tong, recently said that Malaysia is looking to deepen its collaboration with the Indian semi industry to build a robust and resilient supply chain. Malaysia, home to many global semi manufacturers and chip testing companies, can help ramp up India’s fabrication capacity which currently stands at 0.5 percent, while boosting its semiconductor testing capabilities. Unsurprisingly, the report points to test and metrology as one of the key opportunity areas where the country can take lead.
