Is your data center Agentic AI-ready?

Principal analyst Sean Kinney’s recent research note said that agentic AI is increasingly a “consumer of network capabilities,” with networks having to connect not only applications, but also infrastructure that must be discoverable by machines that will have to discover, provision, secure, and consume what is ostensibly “infrastructure.” That’s because agentic agents are designed to achieve a high-level goal, not just execute a predefined command or generate text.

That fact will lead to an explosion of internal “East-West” traffic (machine-to-machine data movement inside a data center), changing physical and operational requirements in support of continuous, adaptive, and multi-step actions. In other words, the ways in which data centers are designed, powered, and secured will be fundamentally changed by the evolution from static, single-turn request:response constructs to extremely dynamic, multi-turn and autonomous execution.

Arm has said that data centers must soon support up to 4x the CPU core density within the same power footprint to support the agentic AI era. Agentic workloads, it posits, will also introduce more unpredictable control flow, irregular memory access patterns, synchronization requirements, and I/O intensity.

That will necessitate tighter CPU-accelerator coupling, with racks engineered to support tightly coupled hybrid systems that integrate CPUs, GPUs, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and advanced CXL fabric links. As summarized by Semiconductor Engineering, data centers will need to pivot from GPU-centric number crunching to CPU-driven orchestration, where managing long-running reasoning loops and context will be just as important as raw compute.

AI Infrastructure Top Stories

Testing and assurance: Viavi tells RCR that the most acute challenges are concentrated within DC fabrics and interconnect, where AI workloads are most tightly coupled. Network testing will increasingly need system-level validation.

RAN for AI: In this ZTE-sponsored piece, there’s an exploration of how operators can distinguish between “AI for RAN,” which improves the radio network, and “RAN for AI,” which uses RAN computing to run general-purpose AI applications.

AI Today: What You Need to Know

Natural-gas DC: Pembina Pipeline Corp. will move ahead with a C$4.6 billion ($3.2 billion) gas-fired electricity plant that will power a data center project in Alberta. TV personality Kevin O’Leary wants to build a 7.5 GW DC in the same region.

LG DSX-compliant BESS: LG Energy’s BESS has qualified as NVIDIA DSX Ready, conforming to Nvidia’s AI Factory Platform, which unifies AI factory design and operations across compute, networking, power, cooling, facilities, and software.

FCC inverter regs: The FCC’s ban on new foreign-produced connected power inverters could slow deployment of on-site renewable energy and microgrid backups for data centers, affecting power supply chains and green-energy procurement.

Trump – Xi Jinping: President Trump and Xi Jinping came out of their summit stating that the two nations will continue a bilateral dialogue on AI safety, floating a structural plan to manage high-level risks, but maintaining foundational approaches.

2-month tariff truce: The two-month extension of the U.S.-China tariff truce acts as a temporary stabilizer for the technology sector, reducing chance of price volatility in hardware components necessary for data center buildouts.
