Orbital data centers: Hype or possible reality? Tim Farrar, a veteran analyst in the satellite industry tells RCRTV’s Pulse that real-time data processing in space would be great for missile defense systems, but engineering limits are huge.
BT, Nscale AIDC: BT’s Jon James and Nscale’s Tom Burke highlighted the importance of connectivity in scaling AI deployments, with the two companies expanding a partnership to build sovereign AI data centers across the U.K.
AI Today: What You Need to Know
Meta’s 10% layoff: Meta’s plan to lay off about 8,000 people indicates a permanent shift in the company’s operational strategy rather than a temporary market correction, with a continued pivot toward AI infrastructure development.
Meta – Graviton deal – With capital freed up by layoffs, Meta announced it would adopt hundreds of thousands of AWS Graviton chips, which expands on its AI infrastructure investments, like its $48B deals with CoreWeave and Nebius.
Carbon removal market: The global carbon removal market was projected to reach nearly $268B by 2050, driven by demand from Microsoft, Google, and Meta to offset AI DC emissions. Microsoft’s recent withdrawal might change that calculation.
Floating data center: Keppel Data Centres and Shell Singapore aim to mitigate land, water and energy constraints by using seawater for cooling, and a future-proof modular design in that each floating module can be scaled up or down quickly.
440 DCs in TX: In Texas, there are purportedly 440 data centers from182 operators, according to Digital Reality’s latest Data Center map, which intends to connect buyers and sellers of colocation, cloud and connectivity DC services.
Nvidia stock faces threat: Google debuted two TPU 8 chips this week, which some say could be a threat to Nvidia if Google’s claims that the chips offer 80% better performance-per-dollar, particularly in inference, are true.
