Siemens and Reinhausen to mass produce compact, solid-state transformers
Siemens and Reinhausen announced recently that they will work together to develop and mass produce a solid-state transformer for high-density AI data centers. The commercial pairing is significant because of the scale and potential for direct mass-production between these two companies. The solid-state transformer will enable direct grid-to-rack DC conversion, delivering up to 36kV grid voltage and 800 volts of DC directly.
Â
For electrical engineers and design leads, an 800 VDC will offer a more compact footprint than that which is possible with conventional multi-stage AC/DC power-conversion architectures.Â
Â
According to Siemens CEO of Electrification and Automation Stephan May, solid-state transformers will enable direct grid-to-rack DC conversion and a reduced footprint that can “respond to load changes in milliseconds, seamlessly handle the extreme power swings of AI training workloads, and avoid downtime while cutting costs.“
Â
The focus of the design will be modularity so that it can be scalable for different grid-connection conditions, as well as the ability to be directly coupled to downstream DC distribution or load systems.
