Siemens and Reinhausen announced recently that they will work together to develop and mass produce a solid-state transformer for high-density AI data centers. The commercial pairing is significant because of the scale and potential for direct mass-production between these two companies. The solid-state transformer will enable direct grid-to-rack DC conversion, delivering up to 36kV grid voltage and 800 volts of DC directly.

For electrical engineers and design leads, an 800 VDC will offer a more compact footprint than that which is possible with conventional multi-stage AC/DC power-conversion architectures.

According to Siemens CEO of Electrification and Automation Stephan May, solid-state transformers will enable direct grid-to-rack DC conversion and a reduced footprint that can “respond to load changes in milliseconds, seamlessly handle the extreme power swings of AI training workloads, and avoid downtime while cutting costs.

The focus of the design will be modularity so that it can be scalable for different grid-connection conditions, as well as the ability to be directly coupled to downstream DC distribution or load systems.
