1 | Cheap drones are forcing a defense rethink – and pushing 6G tech into 5G

The rise of low-cost, mass-deployed drones in Ukraine and the Middle East has created demand for affordable detection systems. ISAC is being fast-tracked because governments need cheaper alternatives to expensive military radar and missile-based defenses.

 

2 | ISAC turns existing cellular infrastructure into a distributed radar network
Instead of building dedicated sensing systems, multi-static ISAC uses multiple synchronized 5G radios to detect, track, and potentially classify drones using existing towers and spectrum with AI-smart signal processing and algorithms. The value is not just detecting an object, but locating and identifying it.

 

3 | First ISAC markets will be defense, then stadiums – both on private 5G

Counter-drone applications around military sites, stadiums, ports, and critical infrastructure are driving early adoption. Public networks face regulatory, interoperability, and commercial challenges, while private 5G networks offer controlled environments for initial deployments.

 

4 | In theory, telcos might monetize networks twice: for comms and sensing
ISAC offers operators a potential new enterprise revenue stream by turning network assets into sensing infrastructure. Beyond security, applications could include traffic management for autonomous drones, industrial monitoring, and public safety – effectively adding a sensing layer to connectivity.

 

5 | (Unfortunate pun, but) ISAC could be the first ‘killer app’ for 5G

A recent Ericsson demo with AT&T in Texas shows the potential, but commercial deployment is a way away – possibly 2027, developing in 2028/29. Vendors must adapt radios, add processing capacity, and resolve standards issues before ISAC becomes a widespread capability that evolves into native 6G functionality.
