As AI continues to move from promise to practice across the telecom industry, a growing gap is emerging between ambition, reality, and responsibility. While next-generation networks are often framed as inherently “AI-native,” a recent IEEE survey suggests the impact of 6G on AI may be far less immediate than the hype implies, raising questions about timing, priorities, and where real value will be created. Speaking with RCR Wireless News about the result, IEEE Senior Member David Witkowski said that to truly understand how 6G might impact AI — and vice versa — the industry first needs to define what 6G will be.
At the same time, operators are already turning to AI in more practical ways — from tackling persistent challenges like customer churn to extracting insight from vast pools of network and subscriber data. But those opportunities come with tradeoffs. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in operations and monetization strategies, privacy concerns and regulatory scrutiny are intensifying, forcing telcos to carefully balance innovation with trust.
AI’s role in telecom is clearly evolving — and for now, at least, it’s doing so unevenly, incrementally, and with higher stakes than ever.

Beyond the Headlines
Wi-Fi in the AI era: Now that every Wi-Fi connection must be properly secured, how can organizations still provide seamless, user-friendly wireless access without overcomplicating the process for IT professionals?
Agile platforms, not rebuilds: Telcos need agile, cloud-native platforms — not full rebuilds — to modernize faster, reduce costs, and support continuous innovation beyond traditional connectivity.
Sponsored Hybrid gateways for critical connectivity: Hybrid home gateways blend Wi-Fi and cellular to support mission-critical connectivity, boosting reliability for remote work, IoT, emergencies, and next-gen services.
Sponsored Dell, AMD advance AI-ready telecom: Dell and AMD have partnered on AI infrastructure to help carriers and enterprises scale performance, optimize workloads, and accelerate AI deployments across edge and core environments.
What We're Reading
P5G at Port of Tyne: Ericsson says the Port of Tyne’s private 5G network boosts operations by enabling real-time scanning, safety monitoring, AI-linked cameras, drones, and remote machinery control across the UK port’s busy, dynamic site.
P5G growth at 20%: Private 5G networks are booming, with global investments set to rise by around 22% annually to about $7.2B by 2028. Deployments span many industries, with 5G dominating and driving Industry 4.0 growth.
NXP to quite 5G: NXP is exiting the 5G power amplifier market, closing its Chandler, Arizona GaN radio-power fab due to weak 5G infrastructure demand and poor ROI. The shutdown reduces supplier options for 5G base station components.
Slow AI uptake for MSFT: Microsoft is reportedly scaling back AI sales targets, especially for its Copilot products, because enterprise uptake has been weaker than expected and few customers are actively using the tool compared with rivals.
The EU’s Trump card: AI: U.S. economic growth is now tied to an AI boom so large that pensions ride its survival; without AI, growth stalls. Europe has two cards to play that might pop the AI bubble, and throw Trump’s presidency into crisis.
